Daily Life and Sports
Sport is considered as an aspect of the social world created by people interacting with each other under
the social, political and economic conditions that exist in societies today.
Sport has become a dominant feature of societies around the world. Former United Nations Secretary Kofi
Annan defined sports as “a universal language that can bring people together regardless of their origin,
background, religious beliefs and economic status”. The United Nations' declaration of 2005 as the "Year of
Sports and Physical Education" is a good example emphasizing the importance of sports. Sports play an
important role in strengthening people's social relations in daily life. In this context, the number of
participants and viewers in sports is constantly increasing day by day.
The number of people who play or otherwise participate in sports is one of the best measures of success.
Participation in sports occurs in two ways. One of them is active and the other is passive. Active
participants are those who physically participate in sports, and those who participate passively are the
individuals who make up the spectator part in sports and whose number cannot be underestimated. All
participants, whether active or passive, are the economic key point of sports organizations. Without them,
the sport would not exist.
