WOMEN AND SPORTS
Another issue that has been scientifically proven in the literature is that women will be stronger through
sports. In this context, it is seen that the numerous benefits of sports have also been researched on
women. Many subjects have been included in academic studies, such as sports increasing self-esteem,
decreasing substance use, and being the golden key for individuals' healthy pregnancy. In this context, we
can say that women's participation in sports and physical activity has shown great momentum.
In addition, it is possible to say that the struggle of women in the field of sports still continues (Young,
1994). The gender identity of women and the gender prejudices they experience still create many
obstacles. In particular, it can be seen that the bodies of female athletes are objectified and override their
athlete identities. However, despite many negativities, it is pleasing that countries such as the United
States, China and Canada implement policies that will set an example in the number of female athletes.
Although it was seen that 30% of the countries did not send female athletes to the Olympic Games in 2000,
it can be said that the number is almost equal (49%) in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. It is also pleasing to
see that the rate of female athletes competing on behalf of Turkey in the Olympics in 2020 is 50%.
As a result, it seems that women have historically been restricted from sports and physical activity due to
various social norms, attitudes and false beliefs. Although it is known that women benefit from physical
activity and participation in sports, it can still be said that there are many obstacles to be overcome. It
should not be forgotten that there are many things that can be done on various platforms and to support
the struggle of women and girls in this field. These matters are briefly outlined below.
- Confront discrimination, be an advocate for female coaches and managers.
- Be an advocate of fair and open employment practices.
- Save data on gender equality.
- Educate others about the history of discrimination in sport and how to define discrimination.
- Inform the media about unfair and discriminatory policies
- Point out the sports branches in which women participate as income generators.
- Include female athletes in coaching.
- Use women's recruitment networks.
- Create a supportive environment for women in your organization.
The existence of women and girls in the field of sports is everyone's responsibility and is among the biggest
steps of social progress.
